Best Home Batteries in Australia

There is no single "best" home battery for every Australian household. The right battery depends on how much evening and overnight electricity you use, whether you need blackout backup, whether you want to start with a smaller capacity and expand later, and how the battery integrates with your existing or planned solar system.

How to Choose the Right Home Battery

Before comparing brands, understand what you are evaluating. Battery quotes include a range of specifications that can be difficult to compare without knowing what each number means in practice.

The six specifications that matter most for Australian residential batteries are: usable capacity, cycle life, round-trip efficiency, continuous and peak power output, depth of discharge, and backup capability. The sections below explain each one.

What the Specifications Mean

Usable Capacity

Usable capacity is the amount of energy (in kWh) you can actually draw from the battery. This is different from the nominal capacity, which is the total theoretical energy the battery contains. The difference exists because every battery retains a small reserve to protect cell health and extend lifespan.

When comparing batteries, always compare usable capacity. The federal battery rebate is also calculated on usable capacity, not nominal. A battery marketed as "15kWh" with 13.5kWh usable stores less accessible energy than a battery marketed as "14kWh" with 13.8kWh usable.

Cycle Life

Cycle life is the number of full charge and discharge cycles the battery is warranted to perform before its capacity drops below a guaranteed minimum (usually 60 to 80 per cent of original capacity).

Most residential LFP batteries are warranted for 6,000 to 10,000 cycles. At one cycle per day (typical for a home battery), that translates to roughly 16 to 27 years. In practice, most homeowners will reach the end of the calendar warranty (10 to 15 years) before exhausting the cycle life.

Round-Trip Efficiency

Round-trip efficiency measures how much of the energy you put into the battery you actually get back out. If you store 10kWh and retrieve 9.5kWh, the round-trip efficiency is 95 per cent. The remaining 0.5kWh is lost as heat during the charging and discharging process.

Most modern LFP batteries achieve 90 to 97 per cent round-trip efficiency. The difference between 90% and 97% is modest in daily savings terms, but compounds over 10 to 15 years. Higher efficiency means less wasted energy.

Continuous and Peak Power Output

Continuous power output (in kW) is the maximum sustained power the battery can deliver at any moment. This determines how many appliances you can run simultaneously from the battery. A 5kW continuous output battery can run a split-system air conditioner, lighting, a fridge, and several smaller appliances at the same time.

Peak power (sometimes called surge power) is the maximum output the battery can deliver for a short burst, typically a few seconds. This handles the startup surge from appliances like air conditioners, pool pumps, or washing machines.

If you want the battery to run high-draw appliances, check the continuous output rating carefully. A battery with only 3kW continuous will struggle to run an air conditioner and other loads simultaneously.

Depth of Discharge

Depth of discharge (DoD) is the percentage of the battery's total capacity that can be used before it needs recharging. A battery with 100% DoD means you can use all of its usable capacity. Most modern LFP batteries have a DoD of 90 to 100 per cent.

Older battery chemistries (particularly lead-acid and some early lithium NMC) had lower DoD, meaning you could only use 50 to 80 per cent of the rated capacity. This is less of a concern with current LFP batteries, but worth checking if you encounter an older model.

Backup Capability

Backup capability means the battery can continue to power your home (or selected circuits) during a grid outage. Not every battery installation includes backup. It requires a compatible hybrid inverter, a backup switchboard or changeover mechanism, and specific wiring during installation.

Backup configurations vary. Some systems are wired to support a broad set of circuits, while others protect only selected essential circuits (lights, fridge, modem, selected power points).

Backup scope is not a property of the battery alone. It depends on the inverter's continuous output rating, how the switchboard is configured, and how much the household draws simultaneously. A larger battery extends backup duration; a higher-output inverter and appropriate switchboard wiring determine how much can run at once. Discuss your specific requirements with your installer before assuming any particular scope.

If backup is important to you, specify this before installation. It affects the inverter choice, the wiring configuration, and potentially the battery size.

Which Battery Suits Your Home?

Best for Starting Small and Expanding Later

If you want to install a smaller battery now and add capacity as prices fall or your needs grow, choose a modular, stackable system. Sungrow SBR, FoxESS, Growatt, BYD, and Alpha ESS all offer genuine modularity where individual battery modules can be added to an existing installation.

Best for Extended Backup Coverage

If backup during grid outages is a top priority and you want more than a few essential circuits protected, continuous output is the specification that matters most. The Tesla Powerwall 3 offers the highest continuous output (11.5kW) in the residential market. For non-Tesla systems, pairing a larger capacity modular battery (20kWh+) with a high-output hybrid inverter achieves comparable results with more brand flexibility.

How much of your home can actually be backed up also depends on your switchboard configuration and your simultaneous load demand, so confirm the achievable scope with your installer rather than assuming it from the battery specification.

Best for Budget-Conscious Homeowners

Growatt, FoxESS, and Alpha ESS offer reliable LFP storage at lower price points than premium brands. All three provide modular expansion, so you can start smaller and add capacity over time. The federal battery rebate (~30% discount) applies to all eligible systems regardless of brand.

Best for EV Readiness and Smart Integration

Sigenergy stands out with its integrated platform that combines battery storage, hybrid inverter, and optional EV charger in a single system. If you plan to add an EV charger and want everything managed through one platform, Sigenergy is purpose-built for this scenario.

Best for Long-Term Durability

sonnen (10,000 cycles) and BYD (8,000 cycles) lead on cycle life warranties. If your priority is a battery that retains the most capacity over the longest period, these brands offer the strongest durability guarantees.

What SunRight Solar Installs and Why

SunRight Solar installs batteries from Sungrow, Sigenergy, FoxESS, and Growatt. We selected these brands because they offer strong LFP chemistry, genuine modularity, reliable warranties, proven Australian support infrastructure, and good compatibility with the inverters and panel brands in our range.

We do not currently stock Tesla Powerwall, BYD, Enphase IQ Battery, sonnen, Alpha ESS, or GoodWe batteries. This is not because these are poor products. Each has genuine strengths as described in this guide. Our selection is based on the combination of quality, value, inverter compatibility, and local support that works best for the majority of our customers.

We include all major brands in this guide because an informed buyer makes a better customer. If you are comparing quotes from multiple installers, this guide should help you evaluate the battery each one offers.

Once you have a brand in mind, the next decision is capacity. Our capacity guides cover SunRight Solar's full battery range:

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my battery brand need to match my inverter brand?

Not always, but compatibility matters. Some batteries are designed to work with a specific inverter brand (e.g., Sungrow batteries with Sungrow inverters, Tesla Powerwall with its integrated inverter). Others, like BYD, are compatible with multiple inverter brands. Your installer should verify compatibility during system design. Mismatched combinations can result in limited functionality or warranty issues.

Compare Inverter Types
Is the Tesla Powerwall still the best battery in Australia?

The Powerwall 3 remains a strong product with the highest continuous output in the residential market. However, Tesla's market share in Australia has declined as modular LFP alternatives from Sungrow, BYD, and others have become available at competitive prices with greater flexibility. The "best" battery depends on your priorities: if you want high continuous output for broader backup coverage and are happy within Tesla's ecosystem, the Powerwall is a solid choice. If you want modularity, inverter flexibility, or a lower entry cost, other options may suit better.

What does cycle life actually mean in real years?

At one full cycle per day, a 6,000-cycle battery lasts approximately 16 years in cycle terms. A 10,000-cycle battery lasts approximately 27 years. Most homeowners will reach the end of the calendar warranty (10 to 15 years) before exhausting the cycle life, so the calendar warranty is usually the binding constraint.

Can I add a different brand of battery to my existing system?

Generally, no. Battery expansion works by adding modules of the same brand and series to an existing installation. You cannot stack a Sungrow module onto a BYD battery. If you want a different brand, you would typically install a separate, new battery system alongside the existing one (if your inverter and switchboard support it), or replace the existing battery entirely.

How does the federal battery rebate affect which brand I choose?

The rebate applies equally to all eligible battery brands. It is based on the usable capacity of the battery, not the brand. Choose your battery based on performance, compatibility, and your household's needs, not on the rebate amount.

Source: DCCEEW

What is round-trip efficiency and does it matter?

Round-trip efficiency measures how much of the energy stored in the battery you actually get back. At 95% efficiency, storing 10kWh returns 9.5kWh. The 5% is lost as heat. While the difference between 91% and 97% seems small, over 10 years of daily cycling it compounds to a meaningful amount of lost energy. Higher efficiency is better, but it is one factor among several and should not override other considerations like capacity, backup capability, or price.
